French botanist and traveler. The son of botanist Andre Michaux (1746-1802), he made several visits to the United States. In February 1806 he embarked on a sea voyage for Charleston (S.C.) but was captured by the British en route and detained in the Bermudas. Biographical note: Henry Phillips was an author, philologist, and numismatist. He was born in Philadelphia in 1838 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1859.
